An interactive, visual novel-style game. Players are given the responsibility to save a community garden as its lease is set to expire. By talking to local residents and completing mini-games, the goal of the game is to improve the garden’s reputation and keep it around for years to come. Completed in just under two months for the Games for Change (G4C) Student Challenge. Selected as the winner of the Outgrow Hunger category for the Expert division.

Working Across Mechanics

A core element of the gameplay experience was ensuring that transitions between mechanics, such as dialogue to top-downs exploration, felt seamless. Thus, many user states were tracked across types of interaction to “remember” a player’s actions and remind them of those decisions later on.

Managing VRAM

Given the video RAM (VRAM) limitations within Game Boy Studio, the tile sets for each sprite had to be carefully planned out. Furthermore, sprites were carefully set up to activate and deactivate at particular moments to ensure the game ran smoothy without stalling or crashing.
